Mail Server Update 12/31/07 @ 12:00 pm
The migration to the MagicMail e-mail and web server was completed 10/10/07. While we have had some problems with MagicMail over the past couple on months, RNS has been working with the developers to correct these problems. Most of this centers around the mail server being flooded with spam requests, until it cannot service our own customers.
In many cases these are a single message inbound from a would be spammer with one 'to' header and several 'bcc'(blind carbon copy) recipients. If this is based solely on the headers of the email, those are easily forged. A spammer could send an email to you as follows: Note -the lines with << are not visible unless showing full message headers.
<<MAIL FROM: <someone@somewhere.com>
<<RCPT TO: <user@ruralnetwork.net>
<< DATA
Subject: subject you will see in email
From: <someguy@someplace.com>
To: <someone_you_never_expected@someplace.com>
* some content here ie: buy my stocks
What you would see is an email apparently addressed to someguy@someplace.com.
We have implemented additional pre-filtering on the mail server, This blocks known spammers and should help keep the server from being overloaded. RNS is working to filter out the spammers, while ensuring that legitimate emails don't get blocked in the process.
Remember you need to use your full e-mail address (username@ruralnetwork.net) and password to log into your e-mail account. As always, please call the RNS office (414-3000 or 888-355-4767) or technical support (414-8372 or 800-504-8887) if you have any questions or problems.
